A Brief History of Wellington Presbyterian Church.
Wellington Presbyterian Church began with the Botkin family’s prayer for God to provide them a local church. Twenty people heard Pastor Don Seltzer, a dynamic and organized pastor backed by Lake Osborne Presbyterian Church in nearby Lake Worth, in the Botkin living room on Sunday, September 11, 1977. On Easter Sunday 1979, 333 people worshipped in the new Fellowship Hall (now Caraway Street) on Wellington Trace. In August 1982, Wellington Christian School prepared for its first grade class and by 1995 housed a new middle school.
Pastor Seltzer left to plant a new church in San Diego, California, in 1985. The congregation called Associate Pastor George Polacek to “lead the way.” In 1987, project Cornerstone resulted in a 1.2 million dollar Family Worship Center constructed on our 12+ acres of property.
Pastor Polacek left in 1989, and Reverend Tom Cook served as Interim Pastor. Jose Ortega-Betancourt was installed as Senior Pastor in September 1990. God blessed the church by allowing more and more young families to join with us in our worship of Him. One member, Michael Rybka, was ordained and became Assistant Pastor.
Both Jose and Mike left to pursue other ministries in 1994. Again, God proved that He is faithful, providing men of His Word to lead this church in worship and including, once again, Reverend Cook as Interim Pastor. In February 1996, God blessed us with Pastor Tim Christenson and his family.
In 2002 the Schaefer Education Building was completed. The middle school, high school and administrative offices for the school are located here. These rooms are used by WPC for Sunday classes as well.
After 10 years of faithful service, Tim Christenson was called to Faith PCA in Sonoma, CA. in March of 2006. In August of 2006, God led us to Rev. Eric Molicki and he was voted in as our current Sr. Pastor.
Since then, vision has grown to become a missional church moving into the community with the gospel through our vision of connecting. We are in the process of pursuing that vision by becoming a church of Teams that “own and operate” our various ministries aimed at realizing that vision.
